Creating a Classroom

Choose a product and program, name the classroom, add instructors and learners, and find the class code.

For: Instructors and Admins

A classroom is where you organize learners, assign a product, and track progress in the Transfr Dashboard. This article walks through creating one from the Classrooms page.

Start a new classroom

  1. On the Classrooms page, select the Create Classroom button (the plus icon in the toolbar).

A window titled Create a Classroom opens. If you manage more than one organization, select yours first from the Organization field. The rest of the fields appear after that.

Choose a product and program

  1. Under Product, select a product from the dropdown.
  2. If Program appears below Product, select one program from the list.

The Product field is a single dropdown, not a set of add or remove buttons. Combined options, like Trek + Train, show up as one choice in that same dropdown. A classroom can have only one program at a time. Program only appears for products that use it.

Add classroom details

  1. In the Name field, enter a name for the classroom.

Classroom names can be up to 50 characters.

Add instructors and learners

You can add instructors and learners now, or skip this and add them after the classroom is created.

  1. Under Instructor, select Create Instructor to set up a brand-new instructor account.
  2. Under Instructor, use the search field to add an instructor who already has an account.
  3. In the learner section below Instructor, create a new learner or select an existing one the same way.

For more on managing learners after the classroom exists, see How do I add and manage learners?

Finish creating the classroom

  1. At the bottom of the Create a Classroom window, select Create Classroom.

Success looks like this: a confirmation message names your new classroom, and it now appears in your classroom list. To check the classroom the way a learner sees it, see How do I preview what learners see?

Find the classroom's code

Every classroom gets a short code made of uppercase letters and numbers. Learners use it to find and join the classroom. Codes are not all the same length — depending on when the classroom was created, yours may be 4 characters or 7. Both are valid, so use whatever the Dashboard shows you.

The code never includes the digit 0 or the letter O, since the two look alike on screen and on paper.

You can find it in two places:

  • On the Classrooms page, look at the Code column in the classroom's row.
  • On a classroom's detail page, look next to the classroom name, labeled Code.

Change a classroom's product later

The product is set with the same single dropdown you used when you created the classroom. There's no separate feature for adding or removing products — you pick a new value from that dropdown.

  1. On a classroom's detail page, select Edit Classroom.
  2. In the Edit Classroom Details window, select a new value from the Product dropdown.
  3. Select Done to save your change.

Remember: a classroom can only hold one program. Picking a new program replaces the old one.

What's different for rostered organizations

If your organization uses a roster integration, the Product and Program fields don't appear when you create or edit a classroom. You can't change a classroom's product or program from the Dashboard for these organizations.
