Using your own Quest headsets?
The journey from boxes of your own Meta Quest headsets to learners in sims: Meta Horizon, the activation code, ManageXR, and enrolling devices.
For: IT Admins at organizations using their own headsets
If your organization buys its own Meta Quest headsets rather than leasing them from Transfr, getting from "boxes of headsets" to "learners in sims" runs through Meta and ManageXR. This article is the map of that journey — each step links to the detailed guide for it.
If Transfr provides your headsets, you can skip all of this: leased units arrive managed and loaded. Open the box, connect to Wi-Fi, and go.
The journey at a glance
- Create a Meta Horizon managed services account (free) and enroll your headsets in it. See Meta Horizon accounts and activation codes.
- Set up the external relationship with Transfr.
- Transfr creates your ManageXR organization. ManageXR is the device-management console your fleet will live in.
- Activate your ManageXR instance. You'll get access to your own console at managexr.com.
- (Optional) Preconfigure Wi-Fi so headsets join your network on first boot instead of being set up one at a time.
- Get the Transfr apps. Apps are deployed to your configuration, or arrive as share codes emailed to you — one per app. To redeem them, see How do I accept Transfr apps in ManageXR?
- Enroll your headsets in ManageXR and let them sync. Once synced, the Transfr menu appears on the headset and learners can sign in.
Worth doing before the headsets arrive
- Network readiness. Headsets need to reach Transfr's endpoints — work through Network Ports and URLs to Allowlist with your network team.
- Start the Meta Horizon account early. Steps 1–4 involve a handshake between three parties (you, Meta, Transfr), so it's the part with the most calendar time in it. The activation code and the relationship ID travel in opposite directions, so it is worth naming who is sending what.
How is this different from leased headsets?
Leased units are the short path: Transfr provisions them in our own ManageXR organization before they ship, so they arrive with apps installed and management in place. Customer-owned units are yours end to end — your Meta Horizon account, your ManageXR organization, your deployment decisions — which is exactly why the setup has more steps.
